This six-night retreat features two days of guided hiking, plus yoga every day, plus our renowned wholesome, healthy food. The walks are suitable for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and can tackle undulating terrain, ranging from easy hills to moderately challenging gradients. Daily yoga classes with meditation bring rest and nourishment to the body-mind and a welcome counter-point for the hill walking sessions.

The Alpujarra region is renowned for its Moorish villages & shaded valleys, waterfalls and gorges - and it's also a Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO). Without doubt, this is one of the finest walking areas in southern Europe.

Our first walk takes you through the beautiful landscape of the Sierra Lanjaron, guided by Sue, an experienced botanist, culminating in a homemade picnic lunch of gluten-free bread, salads & local cheeses at Sue’s stunning mountain-top home.

Our second walk is guided by Arantza, our meditation & yoga teacher. She takes you up a mountain trail to the stunning Tibetan Buddhist meditation centre ‘O Sel Ling’. There you will find a large and surprisingly life-like statue of Tara, the most powerful female goddess of the Buddhist tradition. The beauty of this place is awesome and Arantza’s deep knowledge of the Buddhist tradition is inspiring.

PLEASE NOTE: These walks are not suitable if you have high blood pressure, reduced mobility or are recovering from recent surgery or major illness. Also, the walks may not be appropriate if you suffer from severe vertigo.

Gourmet Vegetarian Food

The food at Kaliyoga will delight and amaze you. Our deliciously gourmet vegetarian cuisine is light, gluten-free and vegan/coeliac friendly. And with three copious meals per day, you will never go hungry. Our super talented nutritionists are happy to suggest alternative ingredients if you have an intolerance to foods that could lead to an allergic reaction.

 

Yoga and Meditation

Under the expert guidance of our in-house teachers Lely and Arantza, you will acquire tools and confidence to build a yoga practice that you can take home. Our yoga method can be applied to all styles of yoga, rather than focusing solely on stretching and shape-making. Physical stability and strength are balanced with mindful tranquility, so, rather than trying to perfect the external shapes of yoga, your yoga experience becomes a meditation in motion.

In the mornings there will be a 2-hour yoga class, preceded by a guided half-hour meditation and in the evenings 1.5 hours. The week culminates with a fun partner yoga session on Friday evening and a self-practice session on Saturday morning.

Because we teach yoga as mindfulness rather than exercise, we do not grade you in terms of your ability. Everyone is welcome, whether novice or experienced.

Self-care Time

You are welcome to sunbathe by the pool, read in a hammock, catch up on some guilt-free sleep, or go for a walk in the beautiful Alpujarra mountains (we have walking maps, or a walking guide can be arranged). If you want to sleep in and miss a yoga class, that’s fine too.

 

Wednesday: Half Day

After the Wednesday morning yoga class we serve brunch, then you are free to do as you please. Options for the day include a trip to the local beach (about 35 mins by car) or a trip to the picturesque mountain village of Pampaneira and waterfall nearby.

Alternatively, you may wish to visit the stunning Alhambra Palace in Granada; or simply stay at Kaliyoga and enjoy a cookery workshop where the food you create will be served in the evening. Please note that kitchen space is limited to 8 people. If you would prefer to dine out at a local restaurant, we can arrange a taxi to take you into Orgiva (10 min). If you’d prefer to rest at home, a light evening meal is available.

 

Evenings / Things to See and Do

Evenings can be quite social, though if you prefer to be quiet, that’s ok too. There is a warm sitting room with a cosy snug to curl up in and relax with a good book; or why not go for an evening stroll in the countryside, or stroll into town (about 20 mins on foot).

Kaliyoga is located 10 minutes from the market town of Orgiva where you will find whole food & hippy shops, cafes and a bustling outdoor market on Thursday mornings. There is also horse riding, great mountain walks, Moorish whitewash villages, beautiful beaches (35 mins drive) and paragliding for the adventurous. We are 50 minutes from the glittering Moorish city of Granada with its Alhambra Palace and Gypsy Flamenco quarter.

 

Our Location

Kaliyoga Spain is located in rural nature between the hill towns of Lanjarrón and Orgiva, surrounded by panoramic views of the Sierrra Nevada mountains and the Alpujarra hills.
We are approximately 1.5 hrs by car from Malaga airport
