Lelly

Lely is deeply knowledgeable about yoga and she has a wonderful knack of delivering its wisdom in a way that is easily embodied with each yoga practice. By placing emphasis on your inner focus, more than your physical effort, the resulting experience is surprisingly powerful and long-lasting. She has studied Hatha and ashtanga yoga and originally trained with the Sivananda school in Kerala. Her influences are Godfrey Devereux (Dynamic Yoga Method), Sarah Powers (Insight Yoga teachings), and Buddhist vipassana meditation.

A regular yoga practice can dispel anxiety, doubt and depression

Many people are initially introduced to yoga for stress relief. The cause of stress is an inability to cope with activity. Intuitively the stressed person will usually attempt to regain control by thinking and working faster, but this burden of additional activity causes the mind to become even more estranged from the physical body, thereby increasing their inability to cope with activity.  Whereas the thinking mind can be a mill of ideas and worries, our body always speaks to us clearly and without speculation. Our thinking mind can relax more easily when it is tethered to our physical body – during yoga posture practice we achieve this via the breath. By linking the body & breath in a smooth sequence of mindful yoga postures, we start to relax, then we begin to experience greater intimacy with people around us, in a completely natural way, and our levels of stress begin to recede.

Yoga teacher & Thai Yoga Practitioner
Arantza (pronounced Ar-an-cha) was raised in the Basque region of Spain and has traveled the world.
She is a graduate of Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre in Kerala and has also studied yoga with BKS Iyengar and Dynamic Yoga with Godfrey Devereux. Her vinyasa yoga classes are invigorating and powerful, delivered with no-nonsense simplicity and down-to-earth wisdom.

Our yoga method is concerned with how we do our yoga rather than what shapes we make

We teach you to experience yoga not just as exercise/stretching, but as meditation-on-the-move. This is a method of yoga, not a ‘style’, the seeds of which will help you to practice any other kind of yoga. The method will also give you support in daily life. Practicing yoga with this method creates a special quality and depth of awareness that can re-calibrate the habitual ways we use our body and mind, triggering a deeper intelligence that helps us to live with more integrity and intuition.

This yoga method works inwards through the body, from the outside in. By broadening, lengthening, grounding and softening wherever we can, we learn to synchronise our movements on the natural breath, creating a steady, lively foundation from which inner surrender and openness are cultivated. This is what the yoga postures are designed to do.

Leah

Leah has practiced yoga for over 20 years and has taught since 2003.
By preparing the ground for an inward yoga journey, she encourages the direct experience of how mindful practice can bring inner peace and balance.

 Leah employs a mixture of traditional teaching methods that encourage you to practice intelligently, enabling you to build a daily self-practice. With Leah, you will explore the inner landscape of body, mind, and breath, discovering and relishing deep peace within the very core of your being. Influences:
 TKV Desikachar, BKS Iyengar and Vanda Scaravelli and alternative approaches to movement and body awareness including Feldenkrais, Qi-gong & dance.

Professional life: 
Before yoga, Leah was a human rights lawyer representing clients in court and delivering training for new recruits on relevant law and procedure.

Developing the quality and breadth of awareness is the key to an inner inquiry

This method can reveal tensions or disassociations that we were not yet aware of and that we are constantly creating due to pernicious habits. In yoga, we seek to cultivate presence within each subtle movement. Unlike habit, presence is always fresh, it never hides and it’s deep wisdom undermines any unskillful patterns of behaviour, leading to personal freedom.

The repetition of a sequence of postures has various functions: (1) it prints the sequence into our memory so that it can be easily adopted as a self-practice; (2) it forms a tangible framework that makes the subtle nature of Awareness more tangible; (3) the rhythm of your movements synchronising with your natural breath becomes a moving meditation that soothes the wandering mind and dissolves tension in the core of your nervous system.

Jenni

Jenni excels at helping students of all ages to engage and connect more satisfyingly with themselves and with all aspects of life. She shares her love of yoga with students like a keen gardener – planting seeds, tending them and encouraging development. Always seeking balance, she will challenge and support you, providing a safe space for enquiry and experimentation. In each class she encourages students to practice yoga in a compassionate and light-hearted way, combining the somatic sequencing of the Dynamic Yoga Method with elements of Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow.

Jenni’s classes are suitable for beginners/novices as well as experienced practitioners. All you need to bring is an open mind.

How deeply you are able to dive into this moving meditation does not depend on the variety of postures

It depends on developing the ability to focus with sensitive, honest, open and non-judgemental awareness on your inner experience. Many “advanced” students are able to twist themselves into all sorts of wonderful impressive shapes, but they will be more nourished by a simple sequence of slow, repetitive, mindful vinyasa, thus experiencing a new depth of awareness and its meditative consequences. The desire for more variety really comes from the seeking mind, but the dynamic yoga method quickly reveals that variety is not nearly as exciting as the juicy, sharp clarity and energy that come from experiencing the inner presence of your real self.

At Kaliyoga’s base in the Alpujarras you can pick from a variety of activities to mix with your yoga, including hill walking, raw food cleansing and juice fasting with nutrition lectures, colonic cleanses and guided meditation. BeautyNewsNYC – 2014

This retreat was also a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people and form ties with them. The contrast between our tense drawn faces and stiff bodies when we arrived and the sparkling expressions when we left was quite revealing of the release and joy experienced during the initiation. I have kept up my yoga practice since my stay even if only for just a few minutes in the morning.

I have only one thought when I think of this retreat: I want to go back as soon as possible and experience every step of this mesmerizing physical and mental transformation again.

Local Area Info

Kaliyoga is located in rural countryside near the market town of Orgiva which lies in the Alpujarra mountain range between Granada city and the Mediterranean coast. Transfers from Granada airport take about an hour by car, and under 2 hours from Malaga airport.


Andalucia

Spain's highest mountains "Sierra Nevada" are a magnificent backdrop to this partly undiscovered area of Spain, complete with fiestas, Moorish castles and some of the best and least expensive food and wine to be found. The region has dramatic and enchanting valleys, forests, vineyards, waterfalls, rivers and picturesque white mountain villages, which unlike many of the coastal resorts have remained unspoiled by tourism. And all this with about 325 days of sunshine per year. Where else is it possible to see oranges, lemons, figs, with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains? Andalusia is, above all, Light. It is a painter's and writer's paradise.

Granada City

This medieval city is located on one of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain range and was a stronghold of the Nazeri Dynasty, the last great Moorish kingdom in Spain. On leaving Spain the Arabs had to leave behind one of the most fabulous medieval palaces ever built, the Alhambra of Granada and the palace itself is protected by the Alcazaba fortress. The walls and ceiling of the Alhambra's rooms are incredibly beautiful with graceful and harmonious courtyards and running water. The Generalife summer palace, on the same hill, is known for its lush gardens with beautiful fountains and tranquil ponds. The Sierra Nevada mountain range rises to the south of Granada and contains a ski resort with the highest peak in continental Spain, Mulhacén (3482 m).



The Alhambra Palace

Granada is an hour away and booking is advised as turning up on spec may mean queues. The booking line is 902 22 44 60 (English spoken), Have your credit card ready (Visa/Mastercard only). There are three sections to the Alhambra: Alcazaba, Palacio and Generallife Gardens. To view the Palacio section, you are given an allotted time of half an hour so organise your visit to the other two sections around this allotted time. Collect any pre-booked tickets from the advance booking window at least ONE hour before your allocated time. Opening hours: 8.30 AM till 8.00 PM all year round Price: 7 euros in total. Granada is a lovely city to explore, with a cathedral, the gypsy quarter (Albaicin / Sacremonte) and lots of great shopping and eating.

Mountain villages

On the road between Orgiva and Lanjaron there is a turning (near BP petrol station) that leads to the most scenic mountain villages. Most accessible are three villages in the Poqueira Valley: Pampaneira, Bubion and Capeleira. They all have cafés and bars, and there are shops selling local produce. There is a funky bar in Bubion called Bar Morisco. Continue up hill past Capeleira and you'll find a flamenco nightclub called Al Catifa, open late 'til late. There is also a lovely mountain spring beyond Capeleira where you can swim in natural stone pools. On the way back, take a left at the junction near Bubion and follow the signs to Pitres, Ferreirola and Mecina Fondales for gorgeous mountain walks. There's a family-owned bar in Mecina with the best paella - ask for Marissa.

Places to eat in Orgiva

There is a fun market on Thursdays (finishes at 2pm) and numerous places to eat, have coffee and eat tasty tapas.
Barraka: Morrocan cafe near the market area. Delicious falafel, shawarma kebabs, Baklava honey-drenched pastries, traditional Indian chai tea, homemade ice cream, ambient music.Closes 8pm.Closed on Mondays.
Pizzeria Almazara: 53 Avenida Gonzales Robles (main street of Orgiva): outside dining in an orange grove (closed Mondays)
El Limonero Restaurant - calle Yañez 27, off Orgiva high street.
Alma Alpujarreña: Traditional Alpujarra food i.e. sopa de ajo (garlic soup), tortilla (potato omelette) and paella. Avenida Gonzales Robles, Orgiva.
Galindos Cafe: coffee, bread, tostados and pastries. Plaza Garcia Morena, 50 yards after the church, opposite the Farmacia.
